After the shock and the grieving ebbed over her fathers death, Annie Sutherland wanted answers. Haunted by his death and the niggling feeling her life was one big lie, she seeks out her father's protégé in the CIA, James McKinley and is thrust into a secret shadowy world where no one is whom she thought, and nothing is what she knew - including her own life. Now, Annie has to discover who James, the man she'd always been in love with, was - friend or foe. As they follow a dangerous road to discover the truth, would James end up as the lover she'd always imagined or a ruthless killer bent on destroying her?*** Anne Stuart has never ceased to amaze me and as I continue to pick up past and future novels written by this prolific author, she is fast becoming a real `go-to' when I want an intense, roller-coaster, thrill coupled with fantastic sensuality! Ms. Stuart, so far has never failed me in that respect. Actually, if I had any nit-picking to complain about it would be that the story ends and I have enjoyed myself so much - I want them to go on, and on.
With the heroine Annie Sutherland, we have a young woman who has led a sheltered and controlled life, even though Annie never knew she was being controlled. Annie adored her father; did everything; and was everything she knew would please her dear old dad. Her dad - a man she knew nothing about - who she loved beyond measure and was becoming more and more the stranger she never knew.
James McKinley, the conservative bureaucrat was the one man other than Annie's ex-husband that she knew she could trust to help her discover the truth. Upon her father's death James had become an enigma and one in which crafted by the able hands of Ms. Stuart - was not someone who gave up his secrets easily.

Moonrise edition by Anne Stuart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I got this on a free books site and was looking for something "thriller-ish" to read. Great premise, great characters, and beautiful writing, but I got tired of the repetitive situations with "should I kill her or not kill her" and "should I love her or not love her." Frankly, I don't think this was any kind of romance. How can James and Annie go off and be happy together, even stay together, after a relationship borne out of so much violence? Didn't buy it. The other thing that drove me NUTS was the author kept putting the character's names in the dialogue. OK, we get it, he's talking to ANNIE. For much of the book, it's only the two of them in the scene, and every line of dialogue ends in "Annie" or "James." Tiresome! A huge pet peeve of mine. That trick works for heightened suspense, usually, but when you use it to death, pun intended, it gets old real quick. Really good writing but a little bit loose on the editing, in my opinion. I might try another Anne Stuart story, but honestly, after this one, not likely.
Annie finds herself chasing after her father death back to her past of heartache. Annie uncover many things that leads to her father death. In between of finding the truth she has to cooperate with her father right hand man that is a totally alcoholic that soon to be very attractive to her. Many characters plays a roll in her father death but what she has to go through to recover the truth could cost her own life to be taken away. Someone puts a contract out to kill before she uncovers the truth.
Thanks to James her father right hand man that has been in her life every since she was a little girl. Now she's a grown women that runs to him for help so when James opens the door to find her standing there asking for his help. He turns her down because he knows trouble had followed her and he was tired of killing and running. He tires to explain to her to let it go and go back home to her husband and she reveals that she was no longer married. As long as James is around Annie is untouchable as they run for their lives.
A fast-paced story - not exactly comfortable, but intriguing. The heroine, Annie, has been raised by a control-freak CIA agent in such a way that she thinks all her decisions have been her own, when in fact she's been emotionally manipulated in every way by her father. When her father dies, she goes looking for answers. The man she ends up asking for help is the last man she should trust, an ex-CIA agent/assassin who knows his days are numbered now that his boss is dead. In fact, he often thinks about how it would be kindest to just get it all over with and kill her. Instead he ends up taking her with him on the run and trying, in his own way, to keep her safe as they look for the answers to her father's death. The heroine is believably useless in the midst of a gunfight, but at the same time she refuses to give up. The hero is pretty scary, but he starts breaking all his old rules for her. At the end, they do a good job of meeting in the middle as they try to figure out how to have a future together.
Fans of Karen Robards and Elizabeth Lowell might find this a good cross-over author.
A nice girl with a secretive father and in love with a man just as secretive. This was a good story about spies and how that kind of lifestyle can affect a family. I liked seeing Annie develop into a stronger person despite her father's determined attempts to suppress her true nature. James is a bad boy turned into a borderline renegade spy. He is right that is he is the wrong kind of man for Annie, but can't help himself. Maybe if Annie wasn't suppressed when her father was alive things would have turned out less painful. I highly recommend this story.
